An authorization is a hold a card processor may place before capture. It is not a completed charge and it is not a payout. Hire a Neighbor is not taking live card payments. If you see authorization language on a future screen, read that screen’s status. Do not send a card number in Messages to “authorize” someone.
Where to go
There is no live card authorization to start. Do not type a card number into Messages, a listing, or an email. If a bank line appears, compare it with Deals and contact your bank.
What to do
- Read the status on the deal if a payment row is shown.
- Do not treat an authorization as money the provider has received.
- Do not enter a card number in a chat, a listing, or an email.
- Use Contact if a charge appears at your bank that you cannot match to a deal you confirmed.
What you should see
When a payout row exists, the labels are Submitted to the payment partner, Waiting to be sent to your bank, Sent toward your bank, not confirmed, Stripe reports paid, Not paid — the bank payout failed, Canceled before it was paid, Held, and Under review. Waiting and in transit are not paid. Stripe reports paid still tells you to confirm with your bank, because a later return can change it. No payout row is expected while payouts are not open.
What this does not mean
- Authorization is not capture.
- Authorization is not a bank payout.
- Payments are not open, so you should not be asked to authorize a card in the product today.
